Tips For Women In Tech: Juggling Family, Career, and Self-Care

Tips For Women In Tech: Juggling Family, Career, and Self-Care

COVID-19 has radically changed the working landscape in America. While working from home offers benefits such as protection from potentially contracting COVID-19 in the office and reduced transportation costs, it also brings about unprecedented challenges — specifically for working women.

According to TrustRadius’ annual report that surveyed the impact of COVID-19 on professional women in tech, “women in tech are 1.6x as likely to be laid-off or furloughed than men.” In addition, women are still expected to assume a large part of the child care responsibility, and thus are “nearly 1.5 times as likely as men to report feeling a greater childcare burden due to COVID-19.”

To avoid the effects of COVID-19 burnout, continue reading for helpful tips you can begin implementing in your professional and personal life to feel less stressed.

.

Tip #1: Manage Expectations

Routines are superb for accomplishing goals and sticking to habits. However, when you are juggling your career, your children, and personal care, strict deadlines and routines may go out the door faster than you think. Carve in an extra 10-15 minutes in between your important tasks of the day and allow yourself the space to be flexible.

Tip #2: Set Clear Boundaries at Work

Now more than ever, checking Slack notifications during lunch time and answering late-night client emails in bed has become the norm. However, these habits can leave you feeling depleted and burned out.

If you find yourself working outside of normal office hours on a consistent basis, make it clear to your employer that unless it’s an emergency, you will be logging off at a certain time. Your employer does not need to know the specifics and if he/she objects, consider having a conversation about ways to streamline the work during the day or shuffling some tasks to other members of the team.

Tip #3: Get Your Endorphins Pumping

Move your body throughout the day! Just 30 minutes of daily exercise can have a significant impact on reducing stress levels and raising your endorphins (the “feel good” hormones). If you can’t block out a chunk of time to workout, consider investing in a standing desk or a seated bicycle to keep you active during extra-long Zoom calls.

Tip #4: Ask for Help

According to CNBC.com, symptoms of burnout can often manifest themselves in wanting to be alone. While quiet time for introspection is a great way of reducing stress levels, consider tapping into your support system and reaching out to friends, family, or neighbors to help alleviate feelings of stress or loneliness.

What is your background prior to working for MinTech Agency?

All through high school and college, I worked in customer service. After college, I started my career in Human Resources and Staffing, and I did that for 5 years before starting MinTech Agency.

Teaching my children about entrepreneurship, ownership, and the keys to generating wealth.

Optimistic. I know all things work in your favor if you believe it. We create our own reality from our thoughts and beliefs so I stay optimistic about my future and know it is all worked out in my favor.

To me, it means knowing I’m accepted, welcomed, and appreciated for who I am and what I bring to the table based on my talents, skills, and experiences. PERIOD.

DEI work is very intense work that takes real Shero/Hero’s to dedicate their time to teaching others how to understand, accept and treat others.

DEI means getting to a point where we don’t need DEI, a point in life where it’s organic and a natural part of life to be empathetic, and fair to others without being forced by the media, policy, and incentives.

If you could pause your life for just one moment, what moment would that be and why?

Everything in life happens for a reason and is setting us up for something else. But if I could pause a moment in life it would be the last time I spoke with my young brother Chris. He was my everything and he was taken away from me two days later.

What is your favorite form of self-care?

Any carefree time alone, where I don’t have to think about anyone but myself. Hanging out with my girlfriends, it’s 7 of us and we have all been friends for 20+ years.

Why did you choose to work for MinTech Agency?

I chose to start MinTech Agency because I wanted to use my talents and experience to help my community. I know building wealth in the Black community is imperative to our future and technology is the future of everything. Millionaires and Billionaires are made every day in tech and we want more than a piece of the pie, we want our own dessert table.

So helping people that look like me land jobs paying $190,000+, making more money than they ever expected makes every day I get up and drop in someone’s Linkedin DM worth it.

What’s the one takeaway you want readers to know about you?

The universe is conspiring to give you whatever you want or believe you deserve. You deserve to have all the great things your mind can envision.

Meet Jacq Riseling

She/Her/They/Them, Jacq Riseling, Marketing Coordinator

Write out a 2-sentence description of yourself as if you were writing your own autobiography.

Jacq Riseling is a Milwaukee-based career chameleon from Southern California. She is passionate about elevating small businesses and in her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, pets, and recording her podcast with her sibling, Jules.

What is your background prior to working for MinTech Agency?

I am a career chameleon which basically means that I have tried a little bit of everything before settling down in my career. In my undergraduate years, I was studying music as well as nursing. I worked as both a piano instructor and a certified nursing assistant during college. I also hosted an open-mic night for local musicians in the Milwaukee area and coordinated college events. After graduating, I worked for music stores, music studios, and pursued music therapy as another career. It wasn’t until the pandemic occurred that I seriously pursued marketing, social media management, and web design. I used to passively do all of those skills in my other previous jobs and I didn’t even know it! I worked for a record label as a web designer, and now I work as the Marketing Coordinator for MinTech! I am also pursuing my Master’s in Communications.

What are you passionate about outside of working for MinTech Agency?

Music! I continue to practice my favorite piano pieces when I have time. I also enjoy hiking and scaling waterfalls with my family when we have the opportunity. Spending time with my family and pets is a big part of my life.

If you could describe yourself with one word, what would it be and why?

Empathetic. I take people’s feelings into consideration a lot and I guess that came from being both a teacher and a caregiver. I like connecting with people and it’s through empathy that I have learned that not everyone is at the same energy level as you are and that is okay.

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mean to you?

As someone who identifies as non-binary and is a minority, DEI is a part of my livelihood. Working for MinTech has allowed me to continue to act on including DEI in everything that I can do.

If you could pause your life for just one moment, what moment would that be and why?

This one is tough because there are a lot of moments that I would want to pause. If anything, it would be anytime when my grandfather was alive. He raised me as a child while my mom was studying in her undergrad so I got to spend a lot of time with him including when he had to go to the local Air Force base by his house in California. Seeing all of the retired airplanes with him was one of my favorite moments in my childhood.

What is your favorite form of self-care?

Meditating and listening to music is my go-to form of self-care. Being able to pause and relax my always-working mind is my favorite form of relaxation.

Why did you choose to work for MinTech Agency?

I chose to work for MinTech Agency because of the mission behind it. Elevating Black, Latinx, and Womxn tech professionals who would otherwise not have an opportunity given to them is important to me. I want to change the demographics of tech leaders (and other sector leaders) to be more inclusive.

What’s the one takeaway you want readers to know about you?

I strive to elevate the voices that would otherwise be overlooked. I am excited to see MinTech Agency grow and thrive doing just that!

4 Key Skills to Cultivate as a Woman in STEM

4 Key Skills to Cultivate as a Woman in STEM

Despite efforts to increase diversity recruitment strategies in STEM, women continue to be disproportionately represented in the makeup of the technology industry. Moreover, women of color within this industry are more likely to face roadblocks to career advancement and parity in comparison to their white female and male counterparts.

According to Builtin.com, “Black women can encounter many challenges their coworkers don’t, ranging from extra personal and work responsibilities to cultural misunderstanding and biases at work, as well as the ongoing effects of historic disinvestment and lack of generational wealth.”

At MinTech Agency, fostering and supporting diversity in the tech space is a top priority. Here are four critical habits women in tech should cultivate in order to thrive within their positions and to mitigate the unique challenges in the workplace.

Build a Supportive Network

As data published by McKinsey & Company illustrate, the pressures of COVID-19 have led 1 in 4 senior women to consider stepping out of or slowing down in their careers, with Black women facing “additional unique challenges” from both COVID-19 and the increase in incidents of racial injustice that reached a boiling point in the early days of the pandemic.

In times like these, having a resource pool of like-minded career professionals to tap into when you’re considering a career change or are in need of professional advice is crucial.

Never Stop Learning

In today’s digital age, online certifications and advanced learning degrees are just a click away. The more you know, the wider your net of opportunity becomes and the more value you can provide to your organization or team.

Sharpen your technical acumen by actively pursuing diversity-driven career opportunities or resources, like a recently announced initiative from Google that aims to provide over 100,000 Black women with educational resources for digital skills, interview training, and resume improvement.

Speak Up!

As a woman in STEM, it can be intimidating to voice your opinions and ask for the things you want. However, in a highly-competitive and fast-moving industry like the tech world, it is critical that you advocate for yourself and practice clear and confident communication with your team, co-workers, and employer.

Time for a Career Change? Consult a Diversity-Focused Recruiter

By being aware of the unique challenges you will likely face as a woman in STEM, you can survey the landscape and be strategic about the way you approach career changes or advances. Consider connecting with recruitment agencies like MinTech Agency that value diversity, and will work with you to negotiate the best possible career opportunities for you based on your specific goals and needs.
