It means everyone has a chance to be successful and a sense of belonging wherever they go.

What is your background prior to working for MinTech Agency?

All through high school and college, I worked in customer service. After college, I started my career in Human Resources and Staffing, and I did that for 5 years before starting MinTech Agency.

What are you passionate about outside of working for MinTech Agency?

Teaching my children about entrepreneurship, ownership, and the keys to generating wealth.

If you could describe yourself with one word, what would it be and why?

Optimistic. I know all things work in your favor if you believe it. We create our own reality from our thoughts and beliefs so I stay optimistic about my future and know it is all worked out in my favor.

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mean to you?

To me, it means knowing I’m accepted, welcomed, and appreciated for who I am and what I bring to the table based on my talents, skills, and experiences. PERIOD.

DEI work is very intense work that takes real Shero/Hero’s to dedicate their time to teaching others how to understand, accept and treat others.

DEI means getting to a point where we don’t need DEI, a point in life where it’s organic and a natural part of life to be empathetic, and fair to others without being forced by the media, policy, and incentives.

If you could pause your life for just one moment, what moment would that be and why?

Everything in life happens for a reason and is setting us up for something else. But if I could pause a moment in life it would be the last time I spoke with my young brother Chris. He was my everything and he was taken away from me two days later.

What is your favorite form of self-care?

Any carefree time alone, where I don’t have to think about anyone but myself. Hanging out with my girlfriends, it’s 7 of us and we have all been friends for 20+ years.

Why did you choose to work for MinTech Agency?

I chose to start MinTech Agency because I wanted to use my talents and experience to help my community. I know building wealth in the Black community is imperative to our future and technology is the future of everything. Millionaires and Billionaires are made every day in tech and we want more than a piece of the pie, we want our own dessert table.

So helping people that look like me land jobs paying $190,000+, making more money than they ever expected makes every day I get up and drop in someone’s Linkedin DM worth it.

What’s the one takeaway you want readers to know about you?

The universe is conspiring to give you whatever you want or believe you deserve. You deserve to have all the great things your mind can envision.

Write out a 2-sentence description of yourself as if you were writing your own autobiography.

Jacq Riseling is a Milwaukee-based career chameleon from Southern California. She is passionate about elevating small businesses and in her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, pets, and recording her podcast with her sibling, Jules.

What is your background prior to working for MinTech Agency?

I am a career chameleon which basically means that I have tried a little bit of everything before settling down in my career. In my undergraduate years, I was studying music as well as nursing. I worked as both a piano instructor and a certified nursing assistant during college. I also hosted an open-mic night for local musicians in the Milwaukee area and coordinated college events. After graduating, I worked for music stores, music studios, and pursued music therapy as another career. It wasn’t until the pandemic occurred that I seriously pursued marketing, social media management, and web design. I used to passively do all of those skills in my other previous jobs and I didn’t even know it! I worked for a record label as a web designer, and now I work as the Marketing Coordinator for MinTech! I am also pursuing my Master’s in Communications.

What are you passionate about outside of working for MinTech Agency?

Music! I continue to practice my favorite piano pieces when I have time. I also enjoy hiking and scaling waterfalls with my family when we have the opportunity. Spending time with my family and pets is a big part of my life.

If you could describe yourself with one word, what would it be and why?

Empathetic. I take people’s feelings into consideration a lot and I guess that came from being both a teacher and a caregiver. I like connecting with people and it’s through empathy that I have learned that not everyone is at the same energy level as you are and that is okay.

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mean to you?

As someone who identifies as non-binary and is a minority, DEI is a part of my livelihood. Working for MinTech has allowed me to continue to act on including DEI in everything that I can do.

If you could pause your life for just one moment, what moment would that be and why?

This one is tough because there are a lot of moments that I would want to pause. If anything, it would be anytime when my grandfather was alive. He raised me as a child while my mom was studying in her undergrad so I got to spend a lot of time with him including when he had to go to the local Air Force base by his house in California. Seeing all of the retired airplanes with him was one of my favorite moments in my childhood.

What is your favorite form of self-care?

Meditating and listening to music is my go-to form of self-care. Being able to pause and relax my always-working mind is my favorite form of relaxation.

Why did you choose to work for MinTech Agency?

I chose to work for MinTech Agency because of the mission behind it. Elevating Black, Latinx, and Womxn tech professionals who would otherwise not have an opportunity given to them is important to me. I want to change the demographics of tech leaders (and other sector leaders) to be more inclusive.

What’s the one takeaway you want readers to know about you?

I strive to elevate the voices that would otherwise be overlooked. I am excited to see MinTech Agency grow and thrive doing just that!

Navigating Discussions about Race in the Tech Workplace

Navigating Discussions about Race in the Tech Workplace

As discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion continue to be at the forefront of science and tech workplaces, Black and non-White professionals carry the heavy burden of educating others about race—with or without being asked.

Now more than ever, workplaces are taking significant steps to diversify their teams and alleviate the systematic barriers to entry that Black and Latino professionals face in the job market.

Despite the educational strides that are being taken, Black and non-White Latino professionals are still tasked with the heavy burden of having to educate others about race or ethnicity—especially during fraught times of racial tension such as those that arose in the wake of the George Floyd killing.

If you are a minority working as a professional in the tech space, you may feel a range of unpleasant or uncomfortable emotions in these situations. However, there are ways that you can engage in fruitful dialogue about race with your co-workers without it being at the expense of your mental, physical, and professional health.

Here are a few ways that you can approach this as a minority in the workplace:

1. Set Boundaries

If you find that the discussions being held around you are harmful to your mental or professional well-being, do not be afraid to set clear boundaries in the workplace. As allies, non-Black co-workers or team members must be prepared to do their own work first, which includes being mindful of the language and actions they display that can be harmful or offensive to oppressed groups.

2. Engage Leadership

It is critical that workplaces have the resources to host diversity and inclusion training workshops, onboard employee assistance groups, and hire workplace therapists so that no one individual or group in the company feels responsible for leading these difficult conversations.

As a valued member of your organization, you have the right to engage your leadership or senior members about the need for the aforementioned resources. In doing so, you are creating opportunities for yourself and other minority professionals in your workplace to have access to a support network.

3. Acknowledge the Gaps

Understand that one conversation will not solve all the challenges you will likely face as a minority in the workplace. However, the most difficult conversations in the workplace can often lead to greater understanding and empathy for one another, as both team members and human beings. Be patient with yourself and your co-workers and continue to stay alert for areas of growth or discussion that you can bring up with leadership or human resources (HR).

Three Things to Know Before Joining a Startup

Three Things to Know Before Joining a Startup

Working at a startup in tech or STEM can be an exciting place for professional growth and development. However, the startup working environment is unique. Continue reading to learn about the key things to know before joining a startup.

Startups are known for being the movers and shakers of their industries. Innovative ideas and products are often formed at startups, and are then backed by investors through funding rounds that support the company’s mission, idea, or products.

If joining a hard-working team in a fast-paced environment is something that interests you, the startup environment may be right for you. But before you send of your applications to startups far and wide, here are a few key things that prospective applicants should know before joining a startup:

1. You Will Get to Know Your Team Closely

Startups can range from small to midsize organizations. While there is ample time for independent work at a startup, close collaboration with your team members is often a necessary part of the job.

In addition, it is not unusual for you to work closely with or know your startup’s founders. Thus, it is important that you believe in and are motivated by the company’s value proposition or mission statement, as you’ll play a key role in spearheading it.

Before accepting a job offer at a startup, do your homework on the founders, the company’s mission, and its culture to make sure these critical elements are a fit for you.

2. Be Prepared to Work Unusual Hours

The unpredictable nature of startups, especially within a highly changeable and unpredictable market like technology or STEM, will likely result in you working long or odd hours.

There may be nights when you and your team members are burning the midnight oil to meet a deadline or a client’s revision. If work life integration is important to you, carefully consider whether a startup’s unstructured working style is right for you.

3. You Will Wear Multiple Hats

If you want to work at a startup, be prepared to take on projects or responsibilities that may not have been mentioned in the job description. Unlike at a larger organization, where there are different departments handling different sections of the work, the long-term success of the startup often depends heavily on the individual or joint contributions of its team members.

Before joining a startup, assess whether or not the unique level of dedication and commitment needed to achieve long-term success at a startup is right for you.
