Meet Alex Powell

Alex Powell, Diversity Tech Recruiter

Alex has nine years of experience in Talent Acquisition, Recruiting, and Career Development in both the public and private sectors.

What are you passionate about outside of working for MinTech Agency?

Alex is passionate about helping to propel underrepresented candidates into a position to better serve their families and communities.

If you could describe yourself with one word, what would it be and why?

Open; I love learning new things as there isn’t much that I won’t try once.
Also, I am a friend whose door is always open and I try to make myself available for those in need.

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mean to you?

It means everyone has a chance to be successful and a sense of belonging wherever they go.

If you could pause your life for just one moment, what moment would that be and why?

Hugging my children. I don’t want them to grow up!

What is your favorite form of self-care?

Eating chubby hubby ice cream and Binge Watching a great TV show.

Why did you choose to work for MinTech Agency?

MinTech mission and vision aligns perfectly with my passion to help an advocate for underrepresented candidates.

What’s the one takeaway you want readers to know about you?

That I am passionate about making a difference one candidate at a time.

Karen-Williams-MinTech-Agency

Meet Karen Williams

She/Her, Karen Williams, Founder/CEO

Write out a 2-sentence description of yourself as if you were writing your own autobiography.

Karen Williams is a speaker, entrepreneur, founder, and CEO of MinTech Agency, a diversity tech recruitment company. Karen is passionate about increasing the number of Black and Latinx tech professionals leading in the technology industry.

What is your background prior to working for MinTech Agency?

All through high school and college, I worked in customer service. After college, I started my career in Human Resources and Staffing, and I did that for 5 years before starting MinTech Agency.

What are you passionate about outside of working for MinTech Agency?

Teaching my children about entrepreneurship, ownership, and the keys to generating wealth.

If you could describe yourself with one word, what would it be and why?

Optimistic. I know all things work in your favor if you believe it. We create our own reality from our thoughts and beliefs so I stay optimistic about my future and know it is all worked out in my favor.

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mean to you?

To me, it means knowing I’m accepted, welcomed, and appreciated for who I am and what I bring to the table based on my talents, skills, and experiences. PERIOD.

DEI work is very intense work that takes real Shero/Hero’s to dedicate their time to teaching others how to understand, accept and treat others.

DEI means getting to a point where we don’t need DEI, a point in life where it’s organic and a natural part of life to be empathetic, and fair to others without being forced by the media, policy, and incentives.

If you could pause your life for just one moment, what moment would that be and why?

Everything in life happens for a reason and is setting us up for something else. But if I could pause a moment in life it would be the last time I spoke with my young brother Chris. He was my everything and he was taken away from me two days later.

What is your favorite form of self-care?

Any carefree time alone, where I don’t have to think about anyone but myself. Hanging out with my girlfriends, it’s 7 of us and we have all been friends for 20+ years.

Why did you choose to work for MinTech Agency?

I chose to start MinTech Agency because I wanted to use my talents and experience to help my community. I know building wealth in the Black community is imperative to our future and technology is the future of everything. Millionaires and Billionaires are made every day in tech and we want more than a piece of the pie, we want our own dessert table.

So helping people that look like me land jobs paying $190,000+, making more money than they ever expected makes every day I get up and drop in someone’s Linkedin DM worth it.

What’s the one takeaway you want readers to know about you?

The universe is conspiring to give you whatever you want or believe you deserve. You deserve to have all the great things your mind can envision.

Jacq-Riseling

Meet Jacq Riseling

She/Her/They/Them, Jacq Riseling, Marketing Coordinator

Write out a 2-sentence description of yourself as if you were writing your own autobiography.

Jacq Riseling is a Milwaukee-based career chameleon from Southern California. She is passionate about elevating small businesses and in her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, pets, and recording her podcast with her sibling, Jules.

What is your background prior to working for MinTech Agency?

I am a career chameleon which basically means that I have tried a little bit of everything before settling down in my career. In my undergraduate years, I was studying music as well as nursing. I worked as both a piano instructor and a certified nursing assistant during college. I also hosted an open-mic night for local musicians in the Milwaukee area and coordinated college events. After graduating, I worked for music stores, music studios, and pursued music therapy as another career. It wasn’t until the pandemic occurred that I seriously pursued marketing, social media management, and web design. I used to passively do all of those skills in my other previous jobs and I didn’t even know it! I worked for a record label as a web designer, and now I work as the Marketing Coordinator for MinTech! I am also pursuing my Master’s in Communications.

What are you passionate about outside of working for MinTech Agency?

Music! I continue to practice my favorite piano pieces when I have time. I also enjoy hiking and scaling waterfalls with my family when we have the opportunity. Spending time with my family and pets is a big part of my life.

If you could describe yourself with one word, what would it be and why?

Empathetic. I take people’s feelings into consideration a lot and I guess that came from being both a teacher and a caregiver. I like connecting with people and it’s through empathy that I have learned that not everyone is at the same energy level as you are and that is okay.

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mean to you?

As someone who identifies as non-binary and is a minority, DEI is a part of my livelihood. Working for MinTech has allowed me to continue to act on including DEI in everything that I can do.

If you could pause your life for just one moment, what moment would that be and why?

This one is tough because there are a lot of moments that I would want to pause. If anything, it would be anytime when my grandfather was alive. He raised me as a child while my mom was studying in her undergrad so I got to spend a lot of time with him including when he had to go to the local Air Force base by his house in California. Seeing all of the retired airplanes with him was one of my favorite moments in my childhood.

What is your favorite form of self-care?

Meditating and listening to music is my go-to form of self-care. Being able to pause and relax my always-working mind is my favorite form of relaxation.

Why did you choose to work for MinTech Agency?

I chose to work for MinTech Agency because of the mission behind it. Elevating Black, Latinx, and Womxn tech professionals who would otherwise not have an opportunity given to them is important to me. I want to change the demographics of tech leaders (and other sector leaders) to be more inclusive.

What’s the one takeaway you want readers to know about you?

I strive to elevate the voices that would otherwise be overlooked. I am excited to see MinTech Agency grow and thrive doing just that!

If you could pause your life for just one moment, what moment would that be and why?

If I could pause my life for just one moment, it would be at my wedding. I am not married yet, but I would love to pause at that moment and really take it in and appreciate it.

MinTech Life: Alexandria Powell, MinTech Recruiter

MinTech Life: Alexandria Powell, MinTech Recruiter

Alexandria Powell is our newest recruiter for MinTech Agency, handling our recruiting outreach, interview and relationship building with candidates and our clients. A native of Cleveland, OH who now calls Pennsylvania home with her husband and two beautiful children including one newborn:). Alex has a true heart for helping people and believes in the MinTech vision that following a job path in tech can truly change your life, family and community. Keep reading to learn more about Alex and make sure to connect with her on LinkedIn.

Can you tell us a little about you?

I started at the University of Akron. I have a bachelor’s degree in communications/public relations. I moved to Pennsylvania in 2014 to begin my master’s program, so I have a master’s in public administration from Penn State University. During my time at Penn State, I worked as an employment specialist for Goodwill Industries helping to find employment for individuals with barriers. This could mean helping people with criminal histories, disabilities, the elderly or veterans. I worked very closely with businesses in the Pennsylvania area to help employ those individuals. I most recently was a talent coordinator for Terra Lingua USA which is a small exchange program for high school students. My job was to find community coordinators and host families for our international exchange students. I also spent time as the career services director for the Ohio Media School working to help students interested in the media field find employment.

I’ve had a special experience working with people who have those barriers, so I came to HR to try to make a difference.

You attended university for Communications and PR. What led you into recruiting and HR?

My goal while I was working toward my bachelors was to work in a nonprofit. I really have a passion for helping people better their lives in any way I can. Throughout my work as an employment specialist and helping those individuals find work within their communities, I figured out that I wanted to be on the other side. I have this perspective that a lot of people in HR or talent acquisition don’t necessarily have or see. I’ve had a special experience working with people who have those barriers, so I came to HR to try to make a difference.

That is cool that your expertise in PR has aligned with your purpose of helping people through tech recruiting and connection.

Yes! I find joy in meeting new people and hearing their stories. I think throughout all of the roles I’ve had, the theme has been consistent with me meeting new people, learning their stories and analyzing those stories to help get them into the right spaces.

So, how did you learn about MinTech?

I originally heard about MinTech when I was looking for a new role in the recruiting field. I was looking for something more fast-paced and really wanted something that presented me with a  larger challenge. Karen reached out to me via UpWork. When I actually started to look more into MinTech, Karen’s mission of helping underrepresented individuals really spoke to me. Although it’s tech, it still serves that same purpose of helping others, and I’ve worked with that mission in my other roles. I’ve always been the kind of person who has taken a passion for helping Black and brown people. I actually have a certificate in Pan-African studies (they didn’t have a minor program in this field at my university). It’s always been a mission of mine to work in diversity in some form whether it was helping people with barriers at Goodwill or helping MinTech serve people of color. That is one thing that draws me to Karen is her passion for helping people of color. Her mission speaks to me. If I can be of service in any way, I will definitely jump at the opportunity. Funny story, I’d actually just started a new role at a different company when Karen reached out to me and realized that MinTech was where I needed to be.

What does a day in the life look like for you as a recruiter at MinTech?

I work very closely with Karen. Every morning, Karen and I will sit and talk about our strategy for the day. Including, how we will find individuals to fill the roles that we currently have available.  Whether that means posting on social media or contacting individuals through LinkedIn or reaching out to individuals we’ve met in the past to re-engage. Also, talking with our clients to make sure we’re keeping them up to date and informed of our search efforts.

One thing I’ve learned, even from my own job search, is that you are your best advocate.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work with a recruiter?

One thing I’ve learned, even from my own job search, is that you are your best advocate. You know your skills and what assets you bring to a company. As a recruiter, we come across lots of resumes, so the best thing you can do is continue to be your biggest advocate. If you see a role on MinTech, reach out to me or Karen and let us know why you’d be a good fit for the role.  Also, just staying in touch and keeping your information up to date so that we can see your progress. Maybe you didn’t have a skill last year, but your update tells us that you’ve spent the past year developing that skill and that will stand out.

MinTech Lived Experiences Summer Talk Series Recap

MinTech Lived Experiences Summer Talk Series Recap

We hosted an amazing tech talk series in September that brought together professionals, entrepreneurs, creatives and more to share their lived experiences. As a firm built on ensuring people of color are seen and provided opportunities to excel in tech, this series was a true labor of love to celebrate our official 1 year in business.

It was so inspiring to connect with over 150 people each Wednesday to share the face of tech not always seen. There were so many thought provoking experiences shared and real questions poised. As one of our panelists shared “The gold rush of our generation is tech”.

As Karen Williams, CEO and Founder also shared, “We have to have representation. People go to work and will work hard for a company if they feel they can obtain the things they see.” This was our goal for the series and we look forward to continuing to elevate the face of tech one person at a time.
